10 Ways to Soothe a sore Throat

10 Ways to Soothe a sore Throat

As cooler weather settles across the nation, more and more people are looking for ways to ease the pain associated with a sore throat. A sore throat occurs when the tissues in the throat become inflamed and irritated. It is often the first sign of a common cold; however, it can also be caused by more serious medical conditions, such as tonsillitis, strep throat or damaged vocal cord. No matter the cause of your sore throat, there are many ways you can relieve the pain and enjoy eating and talking once again.

Gargle with Salt Water

Gargling with salt water is a great way to help relieve a sore throat. Mix a teaspoon of salt in two cups of water and gargle several times a day to help loosen mucus in the throat, reduce swollen tissues and flush out bacteria from the throat.

Marshmallows

Believe it or not, marshmallows can help ease a sore throat. This sweet treat contains gelatin, which can coat the throat. Grab a handful of miniature marshmallows to provide instant relief for a sore throat.

Vitamin C for a Sore Throat

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps improve immunity. When you are sick, your immune system sends out white blood cells to fight off infection. Therefore, you need a strong immune system to ensure you have enough white blood cells to overcome an illness.

Drink Tea

Tea contains antioxidants that will help fight off infection. The tannins found in tea help strengthen your immune system. Instead of using sugar to sweeten your tea, try adding a little bit of honey. Honey contains natural antibacterial properties to help fight infection and reduce inflammation.

Chicken Soup for Your Throat

Chicken soup has been used for years to help relieve the symptoms of a common cold. Researchers believe that the sodium in the chicken broth can help fight off infection, while the heat in the soup helps soothe pain and inflammation.

Anti-inflammatory Medications

Did you know that an anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen or naproxen can help relieve your sore throat? These medications work by reducing the swelling in your throat and providing pain relief. Additionally, this type of medication can help reduce your fever.

Cough Drops

Sucking on a cough drop that contains a numbing ingredient can help relieve sore throat pain. If you do not have a cough drop handy, grab a piece of hard candy and suck on it. Either of these will help increase saliva production, which can help keep irritated throat tissues moisturized.

Rest

One of the best things for a sore throat is rest. While you rest, your body has time to heal itself. If you are suffering with a sore throat, try to stay home in bed and avoid talking as much as possible.

Water

A sore throat is often the result of swollen, irritated throat tissues. When you have a sore throat, the mucus in the mucus membranes thicken. Drinking water can help lubricate the throat and thin secretions.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains compounds that help kill bacteria. Apple cider vinegar coupled with honey is an effective remedy for a sore throat. Combine a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon of honey and 1 cup of hot water for a refreshing drink that will help soothe irritated throat tissues.

Whether your sore throat is caused by a change in the weather, an illness or allergies, there are many things you can do to help relieve the pain and heal inflamed, irritated tissues in the throat. Use these suggestions to help get your voice back and ease the pain.
